When we go home for a vacation, our relatives become a big problem. They think we have lots of money and we won’t know where to spend it. Directly and indirectly they will ask for it.
—Hanan Riyad, an Egyptian woman who, among other expatriates working in Saudi Arabia, incliuding Overseas Filipino Workers [OFWs], expressed her sentiment on “facing substantial financial claims” from relatives whenever she goes on vacation to her country.
Arabnews.com reports that an expatriate’s “relatives would ask for luxury gifts and money” when an expatriate visits and eventually “(steer a expatriate) toward financial difficulty.”
The online site further reports that “the relatives and friends seem to not give the financial situation of the expatriate much consideration and just want to take as much as they can.”
